About this pepper

7 Pot Primo Chocolate is a chocolate-brown colour variant of the 7 Pot Primo, a superhot Capsicum chinense line developed from Trinidad 7 Pot and Naga Morich ancestry. The parent 7 Pot Primo was created by Troy Primeaux in Louisiana, with development beginning around 2005 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Horticulture Department. The chocolate form keeps the core Primo identity: extreme heat, wrinkled superhot pod texture, a sharp scorpion-like tail, and a dark mature colour rather than the original red.

The plant is a green-leaved, bushy superhot chilli plant usually reaching a little over 90 cm and sometimes around 120 cm or taller under strong growing conditions. It produces pendant, irregular, heavily textured pods with thin wrinkled skin, small raised bumps, and the pointed tail associated with the Primo line. Mature pods are generally around 5 to 6 cm long, with a lumpy, folded body and a dark brown to chocolate-brown finish. The pods begin light green and ripen through darker tones before reaching their final brown colour.

The flavour is usually described as sweet, fruity, floral, earthy, and smoky, with the chocolate form adding a deeper brown-superhot character compared with the red type. Grower discussion from 2016 described the chocolate pods as large enough to show good Primo form, very hot, and useful for powder because of their richer flavour. Later seed listings and grower catalogues continue to describe it as having sweet, floral, fruity, smoky, or earthy notes.

Its heat sits firmly in the superhot range. Commercial listings commonly place 7 Pot Primo Chocolate at over 1,000,000 SHU, with some giving an average range of about 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 SHU. The original red 7 Pot Primo is often listed much higher, with figures around 1,473,480 SHU, 1,500,000 SHU, or 1,790,150 SHU depending on source and testing reference, but the chocolate variant is commonly treated as a slightly lower but still extreme-heat form.

The earliest clear online reference found for the exact name appears in a January 2016 grow-list thread where 7 Pot Primo Chocolate was listed alongside 7 Pot Primo Red, Orange, and Yellow. By September 2016, a dedicated discussion thread under the title Chocolate Primos described boxes of chocolate 7 Pot Primo pods already circulating among growers, with comments on their heat, flavour, form, and potential for seed saving and powder.
