About this pepper

7 Pot Wes Chocolate is the chocolate-brown form of the 7 Pot Wes line, a superhot Capsicum chinense selection associated with growers Jim Duffy and Wes Lane. The broader 7 Pot Wes line traces back to a “7 Pot Burgundy” plant grown by Refining Fire Chiles, from which a standout heavily bumpy red pod was selected and worked forward by Jim Duffy. Seeds from that plant were shared with Wes Lane in Texas, who reportedly rated them among the best-tasting 7 Pots, and the line was subsequently named after him.

Grower-facing descriptions consistently emphasise strong productivity, intense aroma, and a sweet-leaning superhot flavour profile. One seller notes that the plants can produce pods larger than 7 Pot Jonah and may reach around 122 cm in height. Pod review descriptions mention wrinkled, heavily bumpy fruit, occasional quasi-tail formation, abundant capsaicin oil inside the pods, and a sweet flavour with minimal bitterness before a rapid throat-focused burn.

Colour variability exists in the wider 7 Pot Wes family. Growers have reported the line producing unexpected yellow and mustard forms in some seasons, with comments that the line can still show instability in colour expression. That broader variability is consistent with the existence of a named chocolate selection in circulation.

Heat reporting is not perfectly standardised. Seller descriptions for 7 Pot Wes Chocolate commonly place it around 1,000,000 SHU, while some listings for the non-chocolate 7 Pot Wes quote around 1,500,000 +/- SHU. The value used here reflects the repeated estimate for the chocolate form specifically rather than the upper end of the wider family.
