Aji Fantasy Yellow
Aji Fantasy Yellow, often listed simply as Aji Fantasy, is a Finnish-bred Capsicum baccatum cultivar created by Jukka Fatalii Kilpinen. It was developed over more than five years for sweet flavour, fruity aroma, strong productivity, culinary usefulness, and gentle heat. Fatalii described it as the first chilli variety bred in Finland for commercial use, and it was registered under plant breeders’ rights as Fatalii Gourmet Aji Fantasy.
The plant has green foliage and a vigorous, productive baccatum growth habit, usually reaching around 60 to 120 cm depending on growing conditions. It is known for producing heavy crops of medium-sized, pendant pods with a distinctive squat lantern, bell, flying saucer, or small hat-like shape. The fruit commonly measures around 4 to 5 cm long and about 3 cm wide, with smooth skin, broad shoulders, and a flattened, lobed body that gives the variety its recognisable shape.
The pods ripen from green to bright yellow. The flesh is crisp and fairly thick for a baccatum, around 2 to 3 mm, giving the fruit a crunchy texture when eaten fresh. The heat is mild to low-medium, with most of the burn concentrated around the centre of the fruit rather than the outer walls. The flavour is sweet, fruity, citrusy, bright, and lightly tropical, with a clean baccatum character that suits fresh use especially well.
Aji Fantasy Yellow became known among growers as a productive, approachable Finnish baccatum with a highly recognisable pod shape. By August 2011 it was already being discussed by Finnish chilli growers under the Fatalii Gourmet Aji Fantasy name, with early comments describing purchased fruit, heat, flavour, and seed saving. Its commercial identity is closely tied to Fatalii’s Finnish breeding work and to its role as a mild, sweet, yellow baccatum suited to fresh eating, stuffing, salads, salsas, fish dishes, poultry, sauces, and general cooking.
