About this pepper

Aji Monika is a modern Capsicum baccatum hybrid from Sweden created by breeder Eva Ingelsson from a cross between Aji Omnicolor and Aji White Fantasy. It was named for Monika, a friend connected with the selection of the yellow-striped form, and current seller descriptions present it as a sister line to Aji Lilly Teolinda, sharing the same parentage but diverging through a distinct striped phenotype. By 2022 it was already in commercial seed listings, and later circulation through specialist seed sellers helped establish it as a recognised named modern aji rather than an unnamed hobby cross.

The plant is described as compact to medium-sized, productive, and well suited to carrying heavy crops of elongated pods. Published size references place it at about 70.0 to 100.0 cm tall, with one seller describing compact plants around 1.0 m. The foliage is green, and the overall presentation is more refined and ornamental than bulky, with the fruit providing most of the visual impact once the plant comes into production.

The fruit is medium-sized, narrow, and elongated, typically about 7.5 to 10.0 cm long and about 12.7 mm wide. Its ripening pattern is one of its defining traits. Pods begin pale green, then mature to a soft cream to pale yellow base overlaid with gold striping. Multiple sellers note that the striping is stronger in person than in photographs, and that marbled, golden-striped finish is central to the identity of Aji Monika.

In flavour and use, Aji Monika is consistently described as fruity, sweet, and balanced, with a moderate heat level that makes it suitable for fresh eating as well as kitchen use. Seller descriptions specifically recommend it for salsas, lighter sauces, salads, and marinades. Its reputation in current circulation is built on that combination of attractive striped fruit, approachable heat, good productivity, and a clean baccatum flavour profile rather than on sheer pungency alone.
