Bhut Orange Copenhagen
Bhut Orange Copenhagen, often abbreviated BOC, is a very hot Capsicum chinense cultivar developed in Copenhagen, Denmark. It originated from a naturally occurring orange mutation found on a Bhut Jolokia plant. The mutation was selected and stabilised over successive seasons by grower Søren Friis Larsen with assistance from Bjarne Hojlund.
Pods are heavily wrinkled and mature to a bright orange colour. Fruit are typically about 6.0 cm long and approximately 2.0 to 3.0 cm wide. The shape resembles Bhut Jolokia types, with a tapered form and uneven surface.
Heat is generally reported between 600000 and 900000 SHU. Some sources state it can approach 1000000 SHU under certain growing conditions. There are no widely published independent laboratory tests specific to this named cultivar, and reported values come from grower and seller estimates. A working figure of 750000 SHU reflects the middle of the commonly cited range.
Plants are described as compact, often around 60.0 cm tall, though some growers report heights up to about 120.0 cm in favourable conditions. The variety is noted for good fruit production once established.
Flavour descriptions from growers emphasise fruity and citrus characteristics, with some stating it is less bitter than standard orange Bhut types. Reports vary slightly between older and newer seed lines, suggesting minor differences between strains or growing environments rather than a formally standardised description.
