Big Olive Mama
Big Olive Mama is a United States Capsicum chinense cultivar released through Towns-End Chili & Spice as a named offshoot from Big Yellow Mama material in the wider Big Mama family. Towns-End describes it as a T-E release that spawned from Big Yellow Mamas there, and links that family back to Troy Primeaux’s Big Mama line from Naga Morich x 7 Pot Douglah. The line was first kept and followed because of its strong flavour response in mixed boxes, then entered wider circulation under the Big Olive Mama name. By late 2021 it was already showing up in public grower discussion, placing it in circulation by that year.
The plant is described as bushy, upright, vigorous, and heavily productive, with large pods and strong performance under heat and humidity. Current descriptions repeatedly frame it as a substantial superhot plant rather than a compact ornamental, with pods typically around 5.0 to 10.0 cm long depending on the source. The fruit is usually described as large, thick, slightly wrinkled, and strongly sculpted, carrying the heavy, imposing look associated with the Big Mama family.
Its flavour is one of the main reasons it has been kept in circulation. Towns-End and later sellers describe it as fruity, tropical, and complex, with a strong chinense profile and intense superhot burn. Published heat figures place it around 800000 to 1200000 SHU, which puts it firmly in the superhot range. It is regularly presented as a pepper suited to hot sauces, pastes, marinades, drying, and powders, where both flavour and heat matter.
A major colour conflict exists in current listings. Some sources describe Big Olive Mama as maturing from dark green to mustard or olive, while others describe a fuller progression from green through olive tones to red at full maturity. Its core identity remains stable across those listings: a large-fruited United States Big Mama-family superhot selected for strong flavour, green foliage, heavy production, and distinctive olive-toned pods.
