Big Pit
Big Pit is a named Italian Capsicum annuum jalapeño-type cultivar associated with Nicola Pit and later circulated by Giancarlo Fadda. It was named after Nicola Pit, and current seller descriptions trace it back to seeds he sent to Fadda in the 2017 season, with the line then selected and named as Big Pit from a giant Mucho Nacho jalapeño phenotype. In current circulation it is treated as a distinct named jalapeño rather than just a generic oversized Mucho Nacho plant.
The plant is described as vigorous, high-yielding, and medium to fairly tall, usually reaching about 60.0 to 100.0 cm in height. Its foliage is green, and the plant is noted for carrying a heavy set of robust fruit. That productivity is one of the traits most consistently attached to its identity in current listings and grower references.
The fruit is large for a jalapeño, thick and fleshy, with a robust elongated form that is slightly conical. Published size descriptions place the pods at about 7.5 to 10.0 cm long and about 3.5 to 4.0 cm wide. The pods begin green and ripen to red, often showing light corking as they mature. Its large size and thick walls are repeatedly highlighted, including in references that describe it as particularly good for stuffing and poppers.
Big Pit is consistently described as sweet, pleasantly spicy, and milder than many hotter jalapeño selections, with current listings placing it around 10000 SHU or below. The flavour is presented as one of the main reasons to grow it, alongside yield and fruit size, and the pepper is framed as a practical kitchen jalapeño for fresh use, roasting, grilling, stuffing, and other cooked uses where a large pod is useful. Its core identity across current references is stable: an Italian named giant jalapeño cultivar with green foliage, green-to-red ripening fruit, high productivity, sweet jalapeño flavour, and oversized pods.
