Bloom of Heather

Bloom of Heather is an Australian Capsicum annuum hybrid created by Packin Heat in early 2024 from (Calico x Mutant) x Mattapeño. The cross was made three times onto the same Calico x Mutant phenotype, selected for being the more prolific plant and for carrying healthy green foliage and white flowers with purple-outlined petal edges rather than variegated or strongly mutant growth.

The pollen parent was a Mattapeño phenotype from the same broader breeding line. Although the selected parent plant did not show the strongest variegation itself, the F1 generation is already showing strong variegation, which gives the line a clear ornamental direction at this early stage.

Its parentage places it in the ornamental-edible annuum group. Calico contributes the dark ornamental and multicolour background, the Mutant side contributes unusual ornamental structure genetics, and Mattapeño contributes the variegated jalapeño-type background that has already expressed strongly in the F1 plants. Because the hybrid is still in early generations, segregation is expected across foliage patterning, plant structure, pod form, pod colour, and heat level.

Bloom of Heather is defined at this stage by its creation history, selected mother phenotype, and early strong variegation in the F1 generation rather than by a fully fixed finished phenotype. Its identity is tied to that specific 2024 parent combination and the breeder’s own selection work within the line.
