About this pepper

Borg 9 Orange is a Capsicum chinense superhot hybrid developed in the United Kingdom by grower Jon Harper. It belongs to the Borg 9 line, originally created by crossing 7 Pot Bubblegum with Naglah, the latter being a Bhut Jolokia x 7 Pot Douglah hybrid.

The Orange form is considered a colour-selected variant within the wider Borg 9 line. Some sources suggest it may trace through Purple Borg 9 selections, though detailed breeding records are not formally published. No official cultivar registration or academic documentation exists for this specific colour variant.

Pods are typically heavily wrinkled and bumpy, consistent with superhot chinense hybrids. Fruit mature to orange at full ripeness. Pod size varies but commonly falls within the typical superhot range of about 4.0–6.0 cm long and roughly 3.0–5.0 cm wide depending on growing conditions and selection.

Heat estimates from seed sellers generally range between about 1000000 and 1400000 SHU. A working value of 1200000 SHU reflects a midpoint estimate from those listings. There is no widely published independent laboratory heat test specific to Borg 9 Orange, and reported heat values are based on grower and vendor claims.

Plants are reported to reach around 100 cm or more in height under favourable conditions and are described as productive. Flavour is often described in grower reports as fruity or citrus-leaning before intense heat develops, though flavour descriptions are subjective.

The name Borg 9 originates from the original hybrid line created by Jon Harper. Some informal sources speculate on the inspiration behind the name, but there is no officially documented naming explanation published in academic or horticultural records.

Conflicting information includes variation in reported SHU values, differences in pod appearance between sellers, and occasional mixing of red, yellow, orange, chocolate and purple variants under the broader Borg 9 name without clear separation of lineage.
