Cabai Megatop

Cabai Megatop, sold commercially as Megatop F1, is an Indonesian large-fruited hybrid chilli from PT Benih Citra Asia under the Bintang Asia brand. It is positioned in Indonesian seed trade as a cabai besar tipe tewe, meaning a large, straight, market-oriented chilli grown for fresh green harvest, red-ripe harvest, and general kitchen use rather than for ornamental value. It was already in live retail circulation by September 2016 and later appeared in official company listings as one of Bintang Asia's established cabai besar varieties.

The plant is described as tall, upright, and sturdy, with live retail descriptions placing it at about 80 to 90 cm high. It is repeatedly described as high yielding, with strong fruit set and good crop load, and official listings give a yield potential of about 25 to 29 tonnes per hectare, while trade listings also give about 1.5 kg per plant under field conditions. It is mainly promoted for highland adaptation by the official producer, though other live sellers market it more broadly from lowland to highland conditions, showing that it has been circulated for a wider range of Indonesian growing environments.

Its fruits are long, straight, and heavy-bodied, usually about 14 to 17 cm long and about 2 cm wide, with some live sellers giving a range of 15 to 18 cm long and 2 cm wide. Older trade descriptions add that the pods have clear shoulders, a blunt tip, a slightly wavy surface, firm flesh, and thick walls. Immature fruit is dark green and the mature fruit ripens to bright or deep red, with the pods described as hard and long keeping, which is one of the reasons the variety is suited to market sale as both green-picked and red-ripe fruit.

Cabai Megatop is treated in Indonesian market writing as a moderately pungent large chilli used for bumbu masakan, sambal, and general cooking rather than as an extreme-heat type. A major factual conflict exists around the species field. Official and general horticultural references place cabai besar, including Megatop F1, within Capsicum annuum, while one academic paper using Megatop F1 material labels cabai besar as Capsicum frutescens. That conflict changes the core identity field, but the variety is otherwise consistently described across live sources as a productive Indonesian hybrid large red chilli with dark green immature fruit, red mature fruit, straight long pods, and medium heat.
