Capsicum lanceolatum
Capsicum lanceolatum is a wild Mesoamerican species first described in 1904 as Brachistus lanceolatus from material collected at Chucaneb in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, and later transferred to Capsicum in 1940. Modern taxonomic sources treat it as an accepted species, with a native range extending from southern and central Mexico through Guatemala to Honduras.
It grows as a subshrub, shrub, or small tree, usually in moist mountain forest and cloud forest. Published records place it from about 500 to 2000 m elevation, and modern monographic treatments describe it from primary vegetation in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. The species became especially notable after a Guatemalan cloud-forest population was rediscovered in 2000 after more than 50 years, while earlier known sites had been lost through agricultural conversion.
The plant is recognised by its narrow lanceolate leaves carried in unequal pairs, its mostly glabrous to only lightly hairy habit, and its axillary inflorescences of only 1 to 2 flowers. The flowering pedicels are non-geniculate and about 20 to 40 mm long, and the species is especially noted for corollas that are white to yellowish-white with purple lines or violet tones. Taxonomic sources also highlight the long, strongly reflexed calyx appendages and the black seeds as key identifying traits.
The fruit are small, fleshy, pendent berries, commonly described as round and ripening from green to reddish-orange or orange-red. Modern Capsicum treatments describe them as non-pungent, and dedicated species accounts place them at about 7 to 10 mm across, with black seeds about 2 to 2.5 mm long. Together with its unusual flower colouring, dark seeds, and rare Mesoamerican distribution, Capsicum lanceolatum is regarded as one of the more distinctive wild species in the genus, and it is also notable cytologically as one of the Capsicum species with a base chromosome number of x = 13.
