Chili Pie
Chili Pie is a modern Hong Kong-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid developed by Clover Seed Co., Ltd. and released into wider public view through its selection as a 2017 All-America Selections winner. It was promoted as a compact mini bell with a mild chilli edge rather than as a standard sweet mini pepper, and its core identity in catalogues is a small, heart-shaped pepper that stays productive in hot, humid conditions and suits pots, small gardens, and other limited spaces.
The plant is compact and upright, usually reaching about 45.5 to 81.5 cm tall. It carries dark green foliage and is noted for strong vigour, reliable fruit set, and the ability to produce about 25 to 30 fruits per plant. Multiple listings describe it as particularly well suited to container culture, where its smaller frame and concentrated yield make it useful as both an edible garden pepper and a visually tidy patio plant.
The fruit is one of the defining traits of Chili Pie. Pods are thick-fleshed, crisp, and miniature bell-shaped with a rounded, heart-like profile, usually around 5.5 cm long and 6.5 cm wide, with individual fruits commonly weighing about 65 to 70 g. They are harvested green or fully red, with the red stage consistently described as the hotter stage. The flesh is repeatedly described as crisp and tasty, making the pepper suitable for fresh eating, stuffing, grilling, roasting, stir-frying, salads, and general cooking.
Its heat is consistently presented as mild, but there is a real market split in the published numbers. Some sellers place it around 500 SHU, while others list it in the 1 to 1000 SHU range or around 2500 SHU. Across those listings, the common point is that Chili Pie is not treated as a hot pepper in the serious pungency sense, but as a mini bell with a noticeable but restrained kick, especially when fully ripe. That mild heat, combined with the thick walls, red maturity, compact growth, and heart-shaped fruit, is the central identity of the variety.
