About this pepper

Crown of Thorns Green is a superhot Capsicum chinense pepper connected to the 7 Pot Crown of Thorns line. The green selection was first described as having come from pods that were expected to be Crown of Thorns Red, but instead produced a lighter green mature colour and strong tailed pod shape. The plant has since been listed as Crown of Thorns Green F1 and Crown of Thorns Green F2, placing it as an early-generation green-fruited selection within the Crown of Thorns type.

The plant has green foliage and is listed as a chinense superhot with a long season, around 100 or more days to harvest. Rebec Valley Farm lists plant height at over 4 ft, about 122 cm or taller, with the variety producing very hot pods that mature to a uniquely light green compared with many darker green or mustard superhot peppers.

The fruit is stout, wrinkled, and heavily sculpted, with a strong tail or thorn-like point that gives the Crown of Thorns line its name. Matt’s Peppers describes the pods as mustardy green-yellow and stout, with a sweet scent, acidic front-of-tongue heat, and mild apple flavour that becomes slightly more acidic as it develops. The ripe colour sits in the pale green to mustard-green range rather than red, brown, or orange.

Crown of Thorns Green is firmly in the superhot range. Texas Hot Peppers described the pods as very hot, probably around 800,000 SHU, while Rebec Valley Farm lists the heat at approximately 750,000+ SHU. The eating profile is hot, sharp, fruity-acidic, and aromatic, with the green/mustard ripe colour making it visually distinct from the red and chocolate Crown of Thorns forms.
