About this pepper

Cumari Atertic is a wild Capsicum praetermissum pepper native to Brazil, most commonly found in the cerrado region. The name “Cumari” comes from the Tupi language and refers broadly to chilli peppers. This species is considered semi-domesticated, growing both spontaneously in the wild and under limited cultivation.

Plants produce small, oblong fruits that grow upright on the plant. Pods are most commonly red at maturity, though orange and yellow forms are also observed. Flowers are distinctive, featuring white petals with yellow or green spotting and a noticeable purple margin.

Historically, Cumari peppers were used by indigenous groups in Brazil for traditional medicinal purposes, including treatment of respiratory ailments and fever. While primarily wild, Cumari Atertic is now occasionally cultivated by Brazilian farmers, and its flavour and moderate heat have led to increasing international interest.
