About this pepper

Dolce Topepo is used as a common or colloquial name for the Italian sweet pepper more widely known as Topepo Rosso. It is an Italian heirloom annuum grown for its squat, tomato-like pimento form, very thick crisp flesh, and distinctly sweet flavour. The name is closely tied to Italian kitchen use, especially for stuffing with meat or cheese, and it is also associated with pickling, roasting, salads, and red sauce. In grower and seed circles it is also linked with the name Christmas Pepper, but its core identity remains the same: a compact Italian sweet pepper with rounded red fruit and heavy, meaty walls.

Plants are generally compact, bushy, and productive, usually about 30.5 to 60.0 cm tall, with green foliage and good leaf cover. The fruit is round to flattened-round, sometimes lightly ribbed, and usually about 5.0 to 8.0 cm across, with very thick, crunchy flesh. It ripens from green to deep red and is repeatedly described as sweet rather than pungent. Public descriptions also present it as well suited to containers as well as open-ground growing because of its compact habit and strong yield.

Its recorded public history places it firmly among older Italian heritage peppers. Grower references describe the variety as having been passed down for more than fifty years, which places its existence at least by 1972, while official European variety listings show Topepo Rosso as an established named pepper variety in Italy. In modern circulation it remains valued less as a novelty and more as a practical sweet pepper for stuffing, pickling, roasting, and fresh eating, with its thick flesh and rounded pimento-like shape being the traits most consistently singled out.
