El Oro De Ecuador
El Oro de Ecuador is a Capsicum baccatum variety originating from El Oro Province in southern Ecuador. The name translates to “The Gold of Ecuador”, referencing both the region's history and the pepper's golden-orange colour at maturity.
Plants are vigorous and highly productive, commonly reaching up to 1.5 metres tall when grown in pots and growing larger when planted in the ground. Growth is vine-like, and heavy fruiting often requires staking. The variety shows good tolerance to cooler conditions and can continue producing fruit into cooler seasons.
Pods are elliptical in shape with medium to thick walls, measuring approximately 3 to 4 centimetres long and 2 to 3 centimetres wide. Fruits mature from green to a bright yellow-orange. The texture is crisp and crunchy, with a sweet, fruity flavour reminiscent of mild capsicum.
Heat levels are low, generally around 2,500 Scoville Heat Units, making it suitable for a wide range of culinary uses, including fresh eating, cooking, and preserving.
