Explosive Ember

Explosive Ember is a compact ornamental Capsicum annuum cultivar grown for its dark foliage, purple flowers, and upright conical fruit. It was already in cultivar trial records by 2002, and by 2003 it was being described as a compact, dense ornamental pepper with early flowering and long-lasting fruit display.

The plant is usually described at about 30.0 to 45.0 cm tall, making it well suited to pots, borders, and window sills. Foliage is deep purple to near-black, sometimes with dark green tones before deepening, and the pods are small, upright, and conical, generally about 3.0 cm long. The fruit starts purple, then passes through orange tones before finishing red, giving the plant a strong multi-colour display over a long fruiting period.

Its flavour is described as sweet with a peppery bite and cayenne-like heat, making it more usable in the kitchen than many purely ornamental peppers. It is described for fresh use, drying, chilli powder, sauces, soups, stews, and bottling, while still being primarily valued for its ornamental effect.

Explosive Ember also appears in greenhouse biological control research, where it was one of the ornamental pepper cultivars tested as a banker plant for supporting Amblyseius swirskii. In that work it was shown to sustain high predator populations and help protect nearby sweet pepper seedlings from pest damage, which makes it notable not only as a decorative cultivar but also as one used in greenhouse pest-management systems.
