Fatalii Gourmet Aji Fantasy
Fatalii Gourmet Aji Fantasy is a Finnish-bred Capsicum baccatum developed by Jukka “Mr. Fatalii” Kilpinen over more than five years and presented by Fatalii as the first variety bred in Finland for commercial use. It is a protected commercial cultivar, with Fatalii explicitly stating that plant breeders’ rights were registered for it.
Official and retailer descriptions are very consistent on the core plant and pod profile. It is described as a bushy, productive plant usually around 75.0 to 120.0 cm tall, carrying medium-sized bell- or lantern-shaped pods typically about 2.5 to 5.0 cm long and around 3.0 cm wide, ripening from green to yellow.
The flavour profile is one of the most consistent parts of the available descriptions. It is repeatedly described as sweet, fruity, mild, and especially suitable for fresh use, including stuffing, grilling, salads, bread toppings, and general cooking. Fatalii’s own description notes that it is milder near the edges and hotter in the centre, which is why it is often framed as a beginner-friendly baccatum rather than a harsh hot pepper. Across listings, the repeated idea is that it was bred to combine attractive shape, heavy productivity, and a gentle, culinary-friendly flavour.
A notable historical point is that Aji Fantasy was formally treated as a protected new variety in Finland rather than simply circulating as a hobby cross. The Finnish Plant Variety Journal lists AJI FANTASY under Jukka Kilpinen with a 21 September 2011 application entry, and a 2011 Finnish trade article describes it as the first chilli variety developed and protected in Finland. That gives it a clearer documented history than most modern hobby-bred peppers.
Heat reporting does not line up perfectly between sources. Some listings place it around 2,500 to 5,000 SHU, others use 5,000 to 10,000 SHU, and some secondary hobby sources go higher. The strongest pattern is still that it is mild by chilli standards, and Fatalii’s own material supports that by rating it only 4/10 rather than presenting it as a genuinely hot variety. The 5,000 SHU value used here should therefore be treated as a practical midpoint rather than a lab-tested fixed figure.
A repeated secondary-source breeding claim says Aji Fantasy was bred from Lemon Drop × PI 441551. That parentage appears in Finnish chilli references, older grower discussions, and grow logs, but Fatalii’s current official variety pages focus on the finished cultivar rather than foregrounding the cross. So that background is widely repeated, but not strongly emphasised in the main official sales descriptions.
Its importance is less about one traditional regional dish and more about its place in the Finnish chilli scene. It became a commercially protected domestic breeding success and later served as a foundation line for other Aji Fantasy derivatives such as Apricot, Stripey, and Sparkly White.
