Filius Blue
Filius Blue is an ornamental Capsicum annuum cultivar valued for its dramatic fruit colour progression and compact growth habit. The plant forms a small, bushy shrub and produces numerous upright-facing peppers.
Immature pods display deep blue to purple pigmentation due to anthocyanin expression, giving the variety its distinctive appearance. As the fruit matures, it transitions through purple and orange stages before ripening to bright red.
Pods are small and conical, typically measuring approximately 12–25 mm in length and about 12–20 mm in width. Their compact size makes the plant well suited to ornamental container growing and decorative planting.
Despite its ornamental classification, Filius Blue is edible and hot. Heat levels are commonly reported in the range of 30 000–50 000 Scoville Heat Units, comparable to cayenne-level heat. These figures are derived from seed listings and horticultural guides rather than independent laboratory testing but are consistent across multiple sources.
Plants produce small white flowers often tinged with purple, and foliage may show dark green leaves with purple highlights. The combination of coloured fruit, tinted foliage, and compact form makes it popular for patio containers and landscape accents.
Grower accounts sometimes note that immature blue fruits can taste hotter than fully ripe red fruits, which differs from the pattern seen in many other chilli varieties. This observation is anecdotal rather than formally documented in scientific literature.
Filius Blue is regarded as a stable heirloom ornamental line within Capsicum annuum rather than an interspecies hybrid. While primarily grown for visual appeal, the fruit can be used in sauces, salsas, or as spicy garnish.
