About this pepper

Fox Dark Ghost Gnarly Ruby is a modern Portuguese Capsicum chinense hybrid created by Laurence Raposo of Fox Peppers. Seller descriptions tie it directly to Fox Peppers and describe it as a younger line made in 2021 from Fox Dark Naga seed, which places it firmly in the recent hobby-breeding scene rather than among older preserved heirlooms. By June 2023 it was already being shown publicly in chilli forums under the Fox Dark Ghost Gnarly Ruby name, and by 2024 to 2026 it had entered wider specialist seed circulation.

The plant is described as bushy, dark-leaved, and very productive, usually about 80.0 to 100.0 cm tall. Public grower and seller descriptions repeatedly emphasise the dark foliage as one of its defining traits, with leaves described as darker than normal and the whole plant presented as highly ornamental as well as productive. Retail descriptions also describe it as a strong-yielding ghost-type cross that sets many pods.

The pods are generally described as gnarly, heavily textured, and medium-sized, usually about 4.0 to 7.0 cm long and 15 to 25 mm across. Its colour change is one of the main reasons it stands out: fruits begin bright purple, then pass through dark green, and finally ripen to bright red. Seller descriptions also present the ripe fruit as richly coloured and highly decorative against the dark foliage, giving the variety a strong ornamental identity even before its heat is considered.

Flavour descriptions present it as lightly fruity to richly fruity, while grower-facing listings treat it as suitable for people chasing both appearance and strong heat. In hobby chilli circles it is mainly valued as a dark ghost-type line with dramatic foliage, changing pod colours, and heavy production, making it a display plant as much as a culinary one.

A major factual conflict appears in public descriptions of its pungency. One indexed retail source describes it only as having a moderate to hot heat level, while another seller markets it as extremely hot and places it at 1000000+ SHU. The core identity remains the same across those references: a dark-foliaged Fox Peppers ghost-type hybrid from Portugal with gnarly pods that ripen from purple through dark green to red.
