Habanero Chichen Itza

Habanero Chichen Itza is a modern Capsicum chinense hybrid sold by Seminis as a habanero-type pepper from the United States. It is a commercial hybrid rather than an old heirloom line, and by February 2009 it was already being discussed publicly by growers under the Chichen Itza Hybrid name. The name ties it to the Yucatán and Maya imagery of Chichén Itzá, and the hybrid later became established enough to be used in multiple greenhouse and crop-management studies in Mexico as a named cultivar rather than just a catalogue novelty.

The plant is described as strong, sturdy, upright, and highly productive, with excellent fruit set. Published grower and commercial descriptions place plant height at about 61.0 to 115.0 cm depending on market and growing conditions. Seminis describes it as producing medium-large fruit with thick walls, concentrated fruit set, enhanced shelf life, and maturity that can be 15 to 25 days earlier than open-pollinated habanero varieties, especially in Mexican trials.

The pods are lantern-shaped to typical habanero form, with a wrinkled surface and a comparatively large size for the type. Published dimensions range from about 4.0 × 3.6 cm to 7.5 × 2.5 cm, with fruit commonly described as thick-walled, crunchy, and borne in abundance on strong plants. Mature colour is consistently described in primary commercial material as orange after a green unripe stage.

Its culinary profile is tied to fresh salsa, hot sauce, pickling, and seasoning powders. Commercial descriptions present it as a fruity habanero with a strong bite, while crop guides note good fruit quality and uniformity. Disease resistance to tobacco mosaic or tobamovirus P0 is repeatedly associated with the cultivar in commercial and extension descriptions.

A major factual conflict appears in public listings over pungency and final ripe colour. Seminis, Ball, and Florida extension material place it at roughly 15000 to 20000 SHU with orange mature fruit, while some reseller and copied descriptions present it at about 180000 SHU and describe the ripe pods as peach or fiery orange. The core identity remains the same across those listings: a strong-setting, early commercial habanero hybrid marketed as Chichen Itza, with medium-large orange fruit and use in both garden and production settings.
