Habanero Maya Red
Habanero Maya Red (also marketed as Habanero Mayan Red or Maya Red Habanero) is a Capsicum chinense habanero-type cultivar commonly described in seed catalogues as producing longer, slightly more slender, lantern-like pods than many standard habanero types. Fruits ripen from green to a glossy, bright red and are typically described around 7–8 cm long.
Seed and grower descriptions consistently emphasise the elongated shape and bright red finish. Plants are commonly marketed as productive and relatively early maturing, with harvest windows often stated around 70–90 days under warm, sunny conditions.
Heat is usually given by sellers in the range of roughly 150 000–300 000 SHU, with some listings extending to about 350 000 SHU. These figures appear to be seller estimates rather than published laboratory test results, so real-world heat may vary by plant and growing conditions.
Flavour notes from growers commonly describe crisp, juicy pods with sweet, fruity character alongside strong habanero heat. Some informal tasting notes describe the fruit as very crunchy and juicy with a sweet base and fruit-forward tones.
Origin claims vary. Many sellers imply a Mesoamerican origin, often pointing toward the Yucatán region of Mexico as part of the habanero heartland, while some catalogue conventions loosely associate similar habanero types with the Caribbean. Informal chilli community discussion (circa late 2000s) also mentions a plantation near Uxmal in Yucatán in relation to “Maya Red” style habaneros, but this is not supported by formal documentation.
There is also name overlap and confusion online where “Maya Red”, “Red Mayan”, and similar labels are sometimes used interchangeably or conflated with other red habanero types, which makes historical lineage and naming consistency less clear. Most available information comes from seed vendors and grower communities rather than academic or registry sources.
