About this pepper

Halloween Thai is a modern United States Capsicum annuum selection associated with Sherwood’s Seeds in Pennsylvania. It was bred and distributed as a dark ornamental Thai type, and by 2022 it was already in public circulation strongly enough to appear in grower posts and Sherwood-linked descriptions noting that the line was mostly stable at F8. The variety built its identity around a Halloween-like colour scheme, with dark foliage and nearly black immature pods that mature to orange, which is why it was named Halloween Thai.

Plants are compact, bushy, and very productive, usually about 45.5 to 61.0 cm tall. Seller descriptions repeatedly describe the plant as prolific, with Sherwood’s Seeds stating that a single plant can produce up to 200 chillies. The pods are borne upright in clusters and are thin-fleshed, making the plant both ornamental and practical for harvest.

The fruit is a typical slender Thai shape, usually about 6.0 to 6.5 cm long and 6.35 to 9.53 mm wide. Pods begin very dark purple to black-purple, then ripen through darker orange tones into a clear orange or mandarin-orange finish, sometimes retaining a little purple mottling. Public descriptions consistently emphasise the strong contrast between the dark plant and the bright ripe fruit, which gives the variety its standout look in late season gardens.

Halloween Thai is described as very hot, with a published figure of 60000 SHU and repeated descriptions of a pungent Thai-style heat. Sherwood’s Seeds describes the flavour as dry, nutty, and strongly suited to Asian cooking, while Chileplants lists it for drying and stir fry. Its combination of ornamental value, heavy clustered production, dark anthocyanin colouring, and practical kitchen use is what made it notable in modern pepper-growing circles.
