About this pepper

Hangjiao 4, also known as Comet's Tail or HJ4, is a Capsicum annuum cultivar developed in China through a space mutation breeding programme led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1987, chilli seeds were sent into orbit to expose them to space conditions in order to increase mutation rates, after which selected plants were stabilised into named Hangjiao cultivars.

Plants typically grow to around 50 to 60 centimetres in height when grown in pots and are highly productive. Pods are large and elongated, often twisted or curved, and can reach up to 30 centimetres in length and 2 to 3 centimetres in width.

The flavour is sweet with a slight bitterness. Heat levels are mild, averaging around 4,000 Scoville Heat Units. Hangjiao 4 is used in a wide range of culinary applications including stir-fries, salads, salsas, and fresh eating.
