About this pepper

MA Wartryx Yellow is a yellow form of MA Wartryx associated with Matthew Arthur. Seller descriptions trace the line back to the same parent mix as MA Wartryx, usually given as Trinidad Scorpion, 7 Pot Jonah, and Ubatuba Cambucci, and present it as a yellow variant rather than a separate old variety.

Plants are described at about 90.0 to 120.0 cm tall, with heavy production and pods around 50 mm across. Fruit shape is usually described as Scotch Bonnet-like or mushroom-shaped, with a rough, bumpy surface and sometimes a protruding point. The yellow form is also described as having smoother skin, thicker flesh, and juicier texture than standard MA Wartryx. Ripening is described from green to yellow-orange, with some pods turning slightly more orange when overripe.

Flavour descriptions are fairly consistent, centring on sweet, fruity, citrusy notes with strong heat. It is specifically described for salsa, fresh eating, sauces, and dried powder use.

There are two main conflicts around this pepper. One is its yellow-form history: some listings describe the yellow variant as a Matthew Arthur creation, while another says the yellow version first appeared as a spontaneous plant in a Pennsylvania grow-out. The other is heat, with one source putting it at 50,000 to 800,000+ SHU and noting that some fruits are much milder than others, while other sellers place it at 1,000,000+ SHU or 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 SHU. The parentage record also includes Ubatuba Cambucci, which does not fit neatly with the simple Capsicum chinense label used in most sale listings.
