Madre Vieja
Madre Vieja is a Capsicum baccatum pepper originating from southwestern Guatemala and is named after the Madre Vieja River in the region. It has been traditionally cultivated and adapted to local growing conditions.
Plants are compact, typically reaching 50 to 90 centimetres in height, and are suitable for container growing. They produce an early and abundant harvest. Pods measure around 6 centimetres long and 1 centimetre wide, with thin, crisp walls.
Fruits mature from light green to deep yellow or orange. The flavour is fruity and aromatic, with some descriptions noting a grapefruit-like character. Heat levels are moderate, averaging around 30,000 Scoville Heat Units. Madre Vieja is commonly used for sauces, drying, and freezing and is valued for its juiciness and smooth pod skin.
