About this pepper

Mattahorn is a United States hybrid bred by Matt's Peppers from Mattapeño and Thunder Mountain Longhorn. It was created to combine the variegated, white-leaved look associated with Mattapeño with the longer fruit form of Thunder Mountain Longhorn, giving the variety a very distinct visual identity within Matt's breeding work.

The plant is noted for showing white leaves early and for carrying strong variegation through the foliage. Growers and seed sellers describe it as a compact to medium plant at about 70 cm tall, making it visually striking even before fruit set. The foliage is one of the defining traits of Mattahorn, with the pale early growth and patterned leaves being a major part of what makes the variety recognisable.

The pods are long, narrow and elongated, developing more length than a typical jalapeño-type fruit and taking on the stretched, horn-like form that gives the variety its name. They are commonly described as striped while immature and mature to red, with the plant selected for longer pods and stronger visual contrast between fruit and foliage. Taken together, the pale variegated plant, elongated striped pods, and Matt's Peppers lineage make Mattahorn a distinctive ornamental-edible hybrid centred on appearance as much as fruit character.
