Mattapeño x Calico
Mattapeño x Calico is a Capsicum annuum hybrid developed in the United States by Matt Ohlendorf of Matt's Peppers. It is a cross between Mattapeño and Calico, both known for strong variegated traits.
The Mattapeño parent originated as a natural mutation discovered in a commercial greenhouse and is characterised by white foliage, purple stems, and striped pods. Calico contributes tricolour foliage and glossy dark fruit. The hybrid combines these traits, producing variegated leaves with green, white, and purple colouring.
Pods grow upright and are small to medium in size. Fruits undergo a multi-stage colour transition, beginning white and progressing through purple, orange, and finally red. Heat levels are estimated at around 20,000 Scoville Heat Units. The line is currently unstable, with visible variation between plants, and remains under ongoing selection.
