Mattapeno x Giant Yellow Jalapeno
Mattapeno x Giant Yellow Jalapeno is a United States-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid built from Mattapeño, Matt's heavily selected variegated jalapeño, and Giant Yellow Jalapeno, a larger yellow-ripening jalapeño type. Mattapeño itself was discovered by Matt in a commercial greenhouse and then worked over several generations into a distinctive jalapeño with creamy white variegated foliage, purple stems, striped pods, and classic jalapeño flavour. Giant Yellow Jalapeno is described as a larger, high-yielding yellow jalapeño with sweeter flavour as it ripens, especially valued for its size and thicker jalapeño-type fruit.
As a cross, Mattapeno x Giant Yellow Jalapeno sits in the same broader breeding thread where Matt has used the original Mattapeño to create dozens of new peppers from unusual parent combinations. The character of this cross is centred on combining ornamental variegation with a bigger yellow jalapeño form, giving it a strong visual identity as well as practical jalapeño-type use. The foliage side comes from the Mattapeño parent, bringing green-and-white variegation and the decorative look that made the original line well known, while the Giant Yellow Jalapeno side contributes the larger yellow-ripening pod profile and sweeter ripe flavour. Together that places this pepper in the ornamental-culinary jalapeño category rather than as a standard plain green jalapeño selection, with the most distinctive appeal being the contrast between variegated foliage and larger pale-to-yellow fruit.
