Mattapeño x Lesya Yellow

Mattapeño x Lesya Yellow is a United States-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid from Matt's Peppers, listed in Matt's Laboratory #4 as a manually made early-generation cross at the F2 stage. Its story starts with Mattapeño, the variegated jalapeño Matt says he discovered while working in a commercial greenhouse and then developed over several years into a white-leaved, purple-stemmed, heavily variegated jalapeño with striped fruit, and Lesya Yellow, a yellow-fruited form of the Ukrainian Lesya line, a sweet heart-shaped pepper bred in Ukraine in the early 2000s.

As a named cross, it sits at the meeting point of ornamental jalapeño breeding and Eastern European sweet pepper breeding. The Mattapeño side brings the strong white variegation, purple stem pigmentation and striped jalapeño-type fruit character, while the Lesya Yellow side brings thick-fleshed, heart-shaped pendant pods, compact plants around 45.5 to 61 cm tall, and a green-to-yellow ripe colour change. That parentage gives the cross a distinct identity centred on variegated foliage and fuller, sweeter-looking yellow-fruited annuum form rather than a standard plain jalapeño profile.

The Lesya side also adds a cultural thread tied to modern Ukrainian pepper breeding. Lesya is widely described as one of the standout sweet peppers from that breeding tradition, valued for its very sweet flavour, thick flesh, and suitability for roasting, stuffing, salads, pickling and fresh eating. In this cross, that sweet pepper background is paired with one of the best-known modern variegated jalapeño projects, making Mattapeño x Lesya Yellow part of a newer collector and breeder culture built around unusual foliage, striking pod colour combinations and experimental hand-made crosses carried forward through numbered generations.

Morphologically, the cross is anchored by two very recognisable parents. Mattapeño is described as a jalapeño-type with white-variegated foliage and striped fruit that mature red, while Lesya Yellow is described as producing thick-walled, heart-shaped fruit around 7.5 to 10 cm long and 7.5 to 10 cm wide that ripen from green to bright yellow. That makes Mattapeño x Lesya Yellow a cross defined by contrast: variegated foliage from the Mattapeño side and broad, fleshy yellow sweet-pepper structure from the Lesya Yellow side, with the visual appeal of the plant being just as central to its identity as the fruit itself.
