About this pepper

Mattapeño x Mini Chocolate Bell is a modern Capsicum annuum hybrid created by Matt's Peppers as a manual cross between Mattapeño and Mini Chocolate Bell, and the line is currently being offered at the F3 generation. Its background combines the variegated jalapeño genetics of Mattapeño, a line discovered by Matt Ohlendorf in a commercial greenhouse and selected over multiple generations for white-variegated foliage, purple stems, and striped jalapeño-type fruit, with the compact sweet bell character of Mini Chocolate Bell, a small brown bell pepper line that traces back to Ohio and was selected from full-sized Chocolate peppers during the 1980s.

The F3 plant described by the breeder produced white leaves and smaller bell-shaped pods, showing a clear pull toward the Mini Chocolate Bell side in fruit shape while keeping the pale variegated foliage influence associated with Mattapeño. Mini Chocolate Bell itself is known for sweet, small bell fruit about one-third to one-half the size of a standard bell and for plants that can reach about 122 cm tall, so this cross sits in the space between ornamental variegated jalapeño breeding and compact sweet-bell form. Publicly, the identity of Mattapeño x Mini Chocolate Bell is defined by that mix of white-variegated foliage, bell-shaped pod expression, and its still-unfixed F3 status.
