About this pepper

Mattapeño x Mocha Swirl is a United States-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid from Matt's Peppers, listed in Matt's Laboratory #4 as an early manual F2 cross. Its background joins Mattapeño, Matt Ohlendorf's variegated jalapeño discovered in a commercial greenhouse in the USA and developed over years into a white-leaved, purple-stemmed, heavily variegated jalapeño with striped fruit, with Mocha Swirl, a variegated sweet annuum sold as an F1 hybrid with compact plants and striped snack peppers.

The parent combination gives this cross a very specific ornamental and culinary identity. Mattapeño brings jalapeño-type form, white variegation, striped pods, and a mild jalapeño heat profile, while Mocha Swirl brings a compact habit, decorative variegated foliage, thick-walled 10 cm fruit, and a ripe colour shift from green and white striping to chocolate-red. Mocha Swirl is also part of the newer commercial striped sweet pepper wave, sold through Burpee and described in the North American vegetable cultivar listings as a distinct F1 hybrid, which gives this cross a modern breeder-to-breeder lineage rather than an heirloom background.

As a plant, Mattapeño x Mocha Swirl sits in the modern collector-breeding space built around foliage variegation, multicoloured fruit, and unusual hand-made annuum combinations. The Matt's Laboratory listing places it firmly in that setting, where each plant can show different traits, but the defining character of this cross is the meeting of two variegated annuum lines: one a jalapeño-type with heat and striping, the other a compact sweet pepper with chocolate-red ripe fruit and strong ornamental value. That makes it a cross grown as much for the visual impact of the plant as for the fruit itself.
