Mattapeño x Mutant
Mattapeño x Mutant is a United States hybrid created by Matt's Peppers from Mattapeño and a filiform mutant. It was bred as one of Matt's early mutant crosses and is grown for its extreme ornamental character, with the breeder describing it as capable of producing a wide range of very different plants from the same seed lot.
The plant is known for throwing multiple distinct phenotypes. The breeder notes that some plants show thin, wiry filiform foliage, some carry white Mattapeño-type leaves, some are purple, and others are plain green. Growers have also documented plants from the line that look almost like a normal jalapeño as well as far stranger forms, showing that variation is one of the core features of Mattapeño x Mutant rather than an exception. A commercial F3 listing describes the plants as reaching about 60 cm tall and specifically recommends sowing many seeds to select the most striking expressions.
The fruit are also variable, but the line is generally associated with smaller chilli pods rather than large blocky fruit. One F3 listing describes the fruit as relatively small and red at maturity, while grow-out posts show purple-fruited phenotypes expected to ripen red. The overall look can shift substantially depending on which traits come through most strongly, but the most sought-after plants combine the mutant foliage with strong colour in the fruit.
Mattapeño x Mutant has become especially valued among growers for its novelty and collector appeal. Community posts repeatedly describe it as one of the stranger and more ornamental pepper lines in circulation, with plants that can look almost alien or unlike a conventional chilli altogether. Its identity is built around that unstable, visually dramatic segregation, combining the variegated jalapeño background of Mattapeño with the filiform mutant character into a line grown as much for unusual phenotype hunting as for the pods themselves.
