Mattapeño x Orange Fish
Mattapeño x Orange Fish is a United States-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid from Matt's Peppers, listed in Matt's Laboratory #4 as Mattapeño x Orange Fish F4, placing it among the early manual Mattapeño crosses Matt created and continued advancing through multiple generations. Its background joins Mattapeño, the variegated jalapeño Matt says he discovered while working at a commercial greenhouse and then developed over years into a white-leaved, purple-stemmed jalapeño with striped fruit, with Orange Fish, a variegated annuum grown for green-and-white foliage and pods that begin pale with striping before ripening orange.
The cross was already being shown earlier in Matt's Laboratory material as Mattapeño x Orange Fish F3 with yellow pods, which gives the line a documented place in Matt's ongoing breeder work before the later F4 release. That earlier yellow-pod note is especially useful because it shows this cross was already expressing a lighter ripe-fruit direction within the Orange Fish side of the pairing, rather than simply reading as another red-ripening Mattapeño derivative.
As a plant, Mattapeño x Orange Fish sits firmly in the ornamental-culinary annuum space. The Mattapeño side contributes the jalapeño-type frame, white variegation and striped fruit background, while the Orange Fish side contributes compact variegated growth, a fish-pepper-derived visual style, and the orange-fruited finish that made Orange Fish stand out from the older red Fish Pepper tradition. Orange Fish is commonly described as a compact plant around 50 to 60 cm tall with pods about 4 to 5 cm long, originally associated with fish seasoning, and that culinary thread carries into the identity of this cross even though its strongest appeal is clearly visual.
In pepper culture, this hybrid belongs to the newer collector-breeder world built around variegation, unusual colour transitions and hand-made crosses released in numbered generations. What makes Mattapeño x Orange Fish distinctive is that both parents already carry strong ornamental value, so the line is centred on foliage patterning and pod display as much as on heat. The result is a Matt-bred annuum cross defined by white-variegated foliage, pale-striped immature fruit, and a ripe colour direction that pushes into yellow to orange tones, giving it a different visual identity from many of the red-ripening Mattapeño crosses.
