Mattapeno x Peter
Mattapeno x Peter is a United States-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid from Matt's Peppers, listed as Mattapeno x Peter F2 in Matt's Laboratory #3. Matt describes the Matt's Laboratory releases as very early manual Mattapeño crosses, and the Lab #3 listing places this pepper alongside other named early-generation crosses from his breeding work.
The cross joins two very different annuum lines. Mattapeño began as a variegated jalapeño that Matt discovered while working at a commercial greenhouse and then developed over several generations into a white-leaved, purple-stemmed, heavily variegated jalapeño with striped peppers. The Peter parent is the well-known Peter Pepper, an heirloom annuum from the United States grown for its distinctive elongated, wrinkled fruit shape, medium heat, and green to red ripening pattern, with pods commonly around 10 to 15.5 cm long.
As a named F2 cross, Mattapeno x Peter sits in the ornamental-novelty side of Matt's breeding work, where the strong variegation and striped jalapeño character of Mattapeño are combined with the unusual pod form and hotter medium range associated with Peter Pepper. The Matt's Laboratory description also makes clear that this is an unstable early-generation hybrid where plants can show different traits from seed to seed, which fits the purpose of the line as an experimental breeding release rather than a fixed finished cultivar.
Its identity is tied to contrast. The Mattapeño side contributes green and white variegated foliage, decorative striping, and jalapeño-type flavour and form, while the Peter side contributes a longer, more novelty-shaped fruit style and a stronger medium heat profile. That gives Mattapeno x Peter a distinct place among Matt's manual crosses as a plant bred for visual impact as much as for fruit, combining variegated foliage with the Peter line's instantly recognisable pod character.
