Mattapeño x (Sparkler x Garda Fireworks)
Mattapeño x (Sparkler x Garda Fireworks) is a United States-bred Capsicum annuum hybrid first shown publicly at the F2 stage on 21 December 2024 and later sold at the F3 stage. The cross was made from Mattapeño and Sparkler x Garda Fireworks seed from Agus Bangkat Widagdo, and the F3 plant description notes that it expressed the familiar white Mattapeño foliage together with small upright pods.
Its character is strongly shaped by the parent line Sparkler x Garda Fireworks, a compact ornamental annuum described as bushy, about 60 to 80 cm tall, and capable of carrying very large numbers of narrow upright fruit. That parent line is repeatedly described as ripening through a striking sequence of pale cream with a lilac blush into violet, yellow, orange, and finally red, with a medium-hot to hot heat range commonly placed around 30000 to 70000 SHU. In this named Mattapeño cross, that fireworks-style pod set is paired with the variegated jalapeño foliage background of Mattapeño, giving the plant a collector-oriented look built around white variegation and a dense display of small upright fruit rather than large pendant pods.
The overall identity of the pepper sits firmly in the modern ornamental and breeder scene. Sparkler x Garda Fireworks is treated in trade and grower descriptions as a decorative container pepper because of its compact rounded habit and multicoloured fruit display, while Mattapeño contributes the unusual white-leaved jalapeño look that made that line stand out in the first place. Taken together, Mattapeño x (Sparkler x Garda Fireworks) is best understood as a variegated ornamental-hot annuum with compact growth, upright fruiting, and a bright multistage ripening display that gives it strong visual appeal through the season.
