Mattapeno x UFO Fluorescent Variegated

Mattapeno x UFO Fluorescent Variegated is a Capsicum annuum hybrid created by Matt of Matt's Peppers as part of his Mattapeño breeding work. It was already in circulation by 2022 as an F2 and was later listed by Matt's Peppers in Matt's Laboratory packs as an F4, showing that it remained an active selection for several seasons rather than a one-off cross.

The cross combines two highly ornamental annuum lines. The Mattapeño side contributes the white-leaved, purple-stemmed variegated jalapeño background with striped jalapeño-type fruit, while the UFO Fluorescent Variegated side contributes bushy growth, strong green-white-purple foliage variegation, and upright decorative fruit. Together these traits give the hybrid its strongest identity as a variegated ornamental-edible line rather than a standard plain-fruited jalapeño type.

The foliage is one of its main features. Parent descriptions and grower posts around the cross consistently point to heavy variegation, often mixing white, green, and purple tones, with dark stems and a very showy overall habit. The cross was also shown growing well indoors in an Aerogarden Bounty, which matches the compact to bushy habit described for the UFO Fluorescent Variegated parent.

Fruit presentation is also strongly ornamental. The Mattapeño parent brings striped jalapeño-type pods that ripen from green with white striping to red, while UFO Fluorescent Variegated is described in circulation with upward-facing pods that ripen either purple to red or white to red-orange. The cross is therefore circulated with a multicolour pod presentation rather than a single plain ripening path, and grower discussion around it notes that plants can come out looking different from one another.

Heat sits in the mild-to-medium annuum range rather than the superhot category. Mattapeño is commonly placed around jalapeño heat, while UFO Fluorescent Variegated is also sold in that same general band or as medium heat, so this hybrid is best treated as an ornamental-hot annuum cross with usable kitchen heat rather than an extreme heat variety.
