Megatron Jalapeño

Megatron Jalapeño is a modern hybrid jalapeño developed by Sakata Seed America and protected as jalapeño hybrid pepper XHP16841 under U.S. Patent 11,324,190. It was filed on 10 September 2020 and later entered public commercial circulation through Sakata's wholesale and home-garden channels as Megatron.

Its identity is built around oversized fruit and early production. Official Sakata descriptions present Megatron as a very early jalapeño maturing in about 65 days from transplant, with strong compact plants, high yield potential, and smooth dense fruit averaging about 11.5 cm long. Retail and grower-facing listings also describe the fruit as thick-walled, firm, cylindrical to blunt in shape, and usually around 4 cm wide at the shoulder, with plants commonly reaching about 91.5 to 122 cm tall in garden conditions.

The pods are typically harvested green but ripen fully to red if left on the plant. Live sources repeatedly describe the fruit as deep green in the immature stage with a smooth exterior, good shelf life after harvest, and a size and wall thickness that make it especially well suited to stuffing. That heavy, dense fruit is the main reason the name Megatron is used, with seller descriptions consistently framing it as a jumbo jalapeño for poppers, fresh market sales, slicing, and processing.

Megatron has also been promoted for practical grower traits rather than only novelty size. Sakata and other commercial listings describe it as widely adaptable, productive, and resistant to bacterial leaf spot races 0-3, 7 and 8 and tobamovirus, with some Sakata wholesale material also listing intermediate resistance to Phytophthora capsici. In industry coverage it was highlighted as a new early, extra-large jalapeño with thick walls, deep green colour, and fresh-market value.

In use, Megatron sits firmly in the modern large jalapeño category rather than in the older smaller market jalapeño types. Current garden and seed listings emphasise its balance of moderate heat, strong production, firm flesh, and oversized fruit, and several explicitly recommend it for jalapeño poppers, stuffing, deep frying, fresh use, and processing into red jalapeño products once fully ripe.
