Midwest Enigma

Midwest Enigma is a modern United States hybrid from Jim of Midwest Gardener in Kansas, released through Matt's Peppers as Midwest Enigma F4. Its identity is built around an accidental origin. The breeder described it as coming from a batch of seedlings that were supposed to be entirely non-variegated, but one seedling showed variegation and did not fit any of his existing projects, which led to the name Enigma.

The plant is described as growing to about 61 cm tall, with good variegation and lots of fruit. Public breeder descriptions present it as a small ornamental pepper with very dark foliage and small round dark purple pods that ripen orange. That combination of dark immature fruit, orange mature fruit, and variegated foliage gives it a distinct ornamental look within the Midwest Gardener pepper lineup.

In flavour and use, Midwest Enigma is presented as more than just a decorative plant. The breeder described the taste as good and very sweet, but also said it carries a considerable amount of heat. In current circulation it is treated as an ornamental-hot hybrid rather than a sweet pepper or a superhot, with its appeal centred on the unexpected variegated origin, compact habit, dark-to-orange colour change, and heavy pod set on a relatively small plant.
