Midwest Midnight Eclipse 2.0

Midwest Midnight Eclipse 2.0 is a modern United States hybrid from Jim of Midwest Gardener, described as a cross between Midwest Midnight Eclipse and Corbaci. It was developed as an improved follow-up to the original Midwest Midnight Eclipse, keeping the same dark ornamental look while producing larger fruit, lighter but still dark foliage, and heavier yields. Current public sale listings describe the line at F4, so it is still being circulated as an unstable but named breeding line rather than a fully fixed cultivar.

The plant is described as growing to about 91.5 cm tall in the garden, with foliage that stays dark but not quite as black as the original Midwest Midnight Eclipse. Public breeder videos and listings continue to present it as a very dark plant, with deep purple to near-black immature pods that later ripen red. Its overall look sits in the same dark ornamental class as the original Midwest Midnight Eclipse, but with a larger-fruited and more productive habit.

Its background helps explain the type. The original Midwest Midnight Eclipse was publicly described by its breeder as a no-heat ornamental selection with very dark foliage, dark fruit, and a slightly sweet smoky ripe flavour. Corbaci is a traditional Turkish Capsicum annuum sweet pepper known for long, curved fruit, strong productivity, and mild to no heat. In Midwest Midnight Eclipse 2.0, that pairing appears to have been used to keep the dramatic dark colouring of the original line while pushing fruit size and overall production higher.

A major factual conflict affects the recorded parentage. Matt's Peppers and a Rumble listing identify the second parent as Corbaci, while one transcripted breeder reel surfaces the name Kowaki instead. That conflict changes the exact cross history attached to the line, although all current public descriptions still agree that Midwest Midnight Eclipse 2.0 is an improved derivative of Midwest Midnight Eclipse with larger dark fruit and better production.
