Midwest Midnight Orange

Midwest Midnight Orange is a recent ornamental pepper developed by Midwest Gardener, the Kansas grower Jim. The earliest public references traced online place it in October 2022, when it was shown as a “Midwest Midnight Orange Version”, described as the darker-orange form of Midwest Midnight rather than the lighter peach-toned form. By later seed listings it was established as one of the named Midwest Gardener releases distributed through Matt's Peppers.

The plant is grown for its striking appearance. Public breeder descriptions and later retail listings describe it as a compact, bushy ornamental with very dark foliage, often reading as deep purple to nearly black, and with small round dark purple pods that mature orange. It is also presented as a strong container pepper, and later a separate variegated version was released, confirming the standard Midwest Midnight Orange as the dark-leaved non-variegated form.

Its fruiting habit is a big part of its appeal. Grower posts show plants carrying plenty of pods at once, and breeder comments describe the fruit as having little flesh, a lot of seeds, and not much flavour beyond the heat. The breeder's own estimate placed it around 20,000 to 30,000 Scoville units, which fits how seed sellers and growers generally present it as a mild-to-medium ornamental pepper rather than a pepper grown mainly for culinary depth. The overall identity of Midwest Midnight Orange is that of a modern decorative pepper with dark moody foliage, round purple fruit, orange maturity, and strong visual impact on a relatively small, tidy plant.
