Midwest Onyx Candy

Midwest Onyx Candy is a modern United States hybrid developed by Midwest Gardener, the Kansas grower Jim. Public breeder descriptions identify it as an accidental cross, and later seed listings show it being distributed through Matt's Peppers, with one retail listing describing the line as F6. The variety was already in active garden use by 2024, and by 2025 breeder posts were showing both the pepper itself and new crosses made from it.

The plant is a compact ornamental annuum that grows to about 30.5 cm tall, making it well suited to containers. Seller and grower descriptions consistently focus on its dark foliage, compact habit, and strong fruit set. The pods are described as almost black when immature and then ripening red, with a conical shape and a glossy dark appearance that gives the variety its onyx-themed identity.

Midwest Onyx Candy is grown for both appearance and flavour. Breeder and seller descriptions say the ripe pods are sweet, crunchy, and somewhat juicy, and grower updates describe it as having a noticeable level of heat rather than being purely ornamental. Its defining combination is a small dark-leaved plant carrying dark conical pods that finish red, with a sweet eating quality backed by a moderate burn.
