Mulato Isleño
Mulato Isleño, often written Mulato Isleno, is a Mexican heirloom Capsicum annuum cultivar within the ancho and poblano type. It is typically described as open-pollinated and is grown for large, mild pods used for roasting and stuffing.
Pods are pendant and usually about 10–15 centimetres long and 3.8–4.4 centimetres wide, ripening from deep green to dark brown. Plants are commonly listed around 60–76 centimetres tall. Maturity is often described as midseason, roughly 70–80 days after transplanting. Pods are commonly roasted and peeled and used for chiles rellenos, and they are also used dried in sauces such as moles.
Heat reporting is inconsistent across sources. Some listings place it around 500–1500 SHU, while others claim figures closer to 2,500–3,000 SHU. Because the cultivar is repeatedly described as mild and your notes also indicate mild heat, 1500 SHU is used here as a conservative single-number value.
Final ripe colour is also reported differently across listings, with some stating dark brown and others describing deep red to red-black. This may reflect growing conditions, harvest timing, or sellers mixing closely related mulato lines under the same name.
