About this pepper

Naga Morich is a Bangladeshi and Northeast India superhot chilli best known for its heavily textured, pocked surface and intense heat. It is described as a bushy plant that can reach about 1.0 m tall with large green leaves. Fruit descriptions commonly place pods around 6.0–8.0 cm long, tapering to a point, and ripening from green through a yellow stage into red.

Heat reporting is inconsistent across sources. One source reports a 2005 HPLC-based average of 923,000 SHU, which is used here as the single-number value. Other commonly repeated figures place it around 1,000,000–1,500,000 SHU, while some references simply state it exceeds 800,000 SHU.

Culturally it is strongly associated with Bengali cuisine where it is used sparingly because of its extreme heat but valued for its distinct fruity character. The name element “morich” is the Bengali word used for chilli pepper, and the variety is repeatedly linked to Bangladesh in descriptions of its traditional growing region.
