About this pepper

Naga Smooky Rainbow is a modern Italian hybrid created by breeder Drax Diego from Black Naga x Pink Tiger. In current specialist seed trade it is treated as a Capsicum chinense collector pepper valued for dark foliage, dramatic ripening colours, strong productivity, and notably sweet flavour rather than for pure brute heat alone. Public grow records from 2020 already describe seed lots as being around F6 or F7, showing that the line had been in circulation through several generations by then.

The plant is described as dark and ornamental, with dark purple stems, purple flowers, and deep green foliage that can show purple venation. Current seller descriptions place plants at about 70.0 cm tall, with compact to medium habit and very heavy fruit set. Several exact-name listings describe it as massively productive, with hundreds of pods per plant, and one seller states that under ideal conditions plants can exceed 1,000 pods.

The pods are small, wrinkled, and visually striking, usually about 5.0 cm long and 20 to 30 mm wide. They begin almost black or very dark purple, hold that dark phase for much of development, then ripen into dark red fruit marked with purple-black spots, streaks, or smoky blotching. That shifting colour pattern is central to the pepper’s identity and is why it is grown as much for display as for eating.

In flavour, Naga Smooky Rainbow is repeatedly described as sweet, fruity, and distinctly chinense, with floral and earthy notes. It is sold as a versatile pepper for fresh use, salsa, stir-fries, and general kitchen use, and multiple growers describe it as a pepper that can be eaten straight from the plant because of its strong flavour and more approachable burn.

A major factual conflict exists over the heat level. White Hot Peppers describes it as mild, Pepper Diaries places it around the low end of habanero heat, while other exact-name sellers place it around 100,000 to 350,000 SHU or 200,000 to 350,000+ SHU. That conflict changes the pepper’s core heat field, but the exact-name sources remain consistent on its breeder, dark ornamental plant habit, near-black immature pods, and dark red ripe fruit with purple-black markings.
