About this pepper

NagaBon, also sold as Nagabon Jolokia or Naga Bon, is a superhot Capsicum chinense hybrid created by crossing a ghost-type Naga/Bhut Jolokia with a Scotch Bonnet. The cross was developed in New South Wales, Australia and publicly documented by The Hippy Seed Company in a post dated 15 March 2010. In that account Neil Smith describes working on the cross with a collaborator named Marcel for several years before sharing it publicly.

The goal of the cross was to combine the extreme heat of the Naga/Bhut line with the larger pod size and flavour characteristics associated with Scotch Bonnet peppers. Grower descriptions repeatedly note that the plants are extremely productive. In the original documentation it was reported that plants could set so many heavy pods that thick stakes were needed to support the weight.

Commercial descriptions from The Chilli Factory state that the cross originated there and that Neil Smith later named it “Naga Bon” after encountering the plant. That source also provides unusually detailed production notes, describing plants reaching roughly 140.0 to 150.0 cm tall and producing approximately 2.0 to 2.2 kg of fresh fruit per plant across a growing season of around four to six months.

Pod shape is commonly described as oblong with a small pointed tip, measuring roughly 5.0 to 10.0 cm long. Flavour descriptions consistently highlight a profile that begins with the classic Naga-style heat but develops a sweeter undertone, with several sources noting it lacks some of the bitterness often associated with pure Naga peppers.

Heat estimates reported online cluster strongly around 750,000 to 800,000 SHU, which is why a single-number value of 775,000 SHU is used here. Some seed sellers quote higher figures, occasionally listing it near or above 1,000,000 SHU, indicating variation in reported heat across the seed trade.
