About this pepper

Orange Peter is an orange-ripening heirloom Capsicum annuum from the Peter Pepper group, grown for its unusual phallic pod shape, bright ripe colour, and medium heat. Public references show the orange form already in circulation by February 2008, and later grower discussions and seed listings show it had become an established named colour form by the early 2010s. Commercial listings place the orange strain in the United States, while some descriptions for the broader Peter Pepper group treat the deeper origin as uncertain.

The plant is typically described as producing smooth, glossy, thick-fleshed pods with the characteristic Peter Pepper shape, usually around 10.5 to 11.5 cm long and about 3.5 cm wide, ripening from green to bright orange. Foliage is green, stems are green, flowers are white, and the plant is usually presented as a productive medium-sized annuum suited to warm-season growing. The flavour is commonly described as sweeter and tangier than other Peter Pepper colour forms, with a medium heat level that keeps it firmly usable in the kitchen rather than as a pure novelty.

Orange Peter has a strong place in novelty and collector pepper culture because the fruit shape makes it instantly recognisable, but it is also treated as a practical cooking pepper. Sellers and pepper writers describe it as useful for pickling, salsa, hot sauce, drying, and chilli powder, and older Peter Pepper writing places this line in the home-garden tradition of peppers grown both for laughs and for real flavour. In that sense, Orange Peter stands out not just for shape, but for combining ornamental value, bright orange ripe colour, solid kitchen use, and a long-running reputation as one of the most talked-about heirloom annuum peppers in circulation.
