About this pepper

Panex 100 is an Indonesian large red chilli hybrid released by PT East West Seed Indonesia under the Panah Merah brand. It appears in the official Indonesian seed database as Cabai Besar Panex 100 with release number 490/Kpts/SR.120/2/2013, placing it in commercial circulation by 2013. It is positioned as a market-farming type for medium to high elevations, but live trade descriptions also note that it tolerates hot conditions well.

The plant is described as vigorous, spreading to umbrella-shaped in habit, with broad branching and green foliage. Retail and grower descriptions place it among the larger Indonesian cabai besar types, commonly reaching about 100 to 120 cm tall and about 100 cm wide under field conditions. It is repeatedly promoted for good adaptation, strong yield potential, and resistance or tolerance to bacterial wilt and Phytophthora stem or root rot, which is a major part of its identity in Indonesian seed trade.

Its fruit is long, slightly flattened, and glossy, usually about 17 cm long and about 2 to 2.1 cm wide, with an average fruit weight around 21 to 22 g. The pods are harvested both green and red, with mature fruit finishing a bright glossy red. Sellers also describe the fruit as tolerant to splitting and tolerant to yellow tip disorder, which makes it a practical commercial type rather than just a garden chilli.

Panex 100 is grown as a productive fresh-market chilli, with live descriptions giving a potential yield around 1 to 1.5 kg per plant or roughly 16 to 25 tonnes per hectare, and harvest commonly beginning around 80 to 105 days after transplanting, with some listings extending the average harvest window to about 100 to 110 days depending on elevation. Its size, colour, and moderate pungency fit the Indonesian cabai merah besar role, where peppers are valued not only for heat but also for colour, aroma, texture, and use in sambal, balado, and everyday bumbu masak.
