About this pepper

Pimenta da Neyde is a naturally occurring hybrid discovered in Brazil by Neyde Hidalgo. It is believed to be a cross between Capsicum annuum and Capsicum chinense.

Plants are notable for their dark purple to near-black foliage caused by high anthocyanin content. Pods are elongated, typically measuring 5 to 7.5 centimetres in length, and retain their deep purple colour throughout maturation rather than changing colour at ripeness.

The flavour is fruity with a slight bitterness, similar to habanero-type peppers. Heat levels are high, averaging around 150,000 Scoville Heat Units. Due to its intense pigmentation and flavour traits, Pimenta da Neyde has been widely used in breeding projects to develop dark-coloured pepper varieties.
