About this pepper

Purple Candlelight is a compact ornamental Capsicum annuum cultivar grown mainly for upright clusters of small pods rather than large fruit size. Exact-name seller descriptions present it as a bushy, high-yielding plant around 60 cm tall with pods about 3.0–4.0 cm long and roughly 10–15 mm wide. It is commonly positioned as both an ornamental and edible pepper, suitable for patio pots, windowsills, and small-space growing.

The colour progression is one of its defining features. Some listings describe the pods broadly as moving from purple through several colour stages before finishing red, while other exact-name sources simplify that sequence to purple, orange, and red. Purple to orange to red is the clearest short ripening sequence supported across the live descriptions.

Heat reporting does not line up perfectly online. The Hippy Seed Company places it around 2,500–5,000 SHU, which supports the single-number midpoint of 3,750 SHU used here. Another retail listing for the same exact name gives a much hotter 20,000–40,000 SHU, but that higher figure is not as well supported by detailed morphology or tasting information, so the lower range appears more reliable.

History and origin are also inconsistent. One seller source describes the variety as being from South America, while another video title claims Finland as the origin. Because those claims conflict and no stronger exact-name evidence resolves them, country of origin is left null. What is clearer is that Purple Candlelight now circulates in the chilli seed trade as a named ornamental cultivar valued for decorative display and general edible use including fresh eating, drying, pickling, and powder.
